  • Mountain Clean-Up

    Let’s give back to the mountains we love. We are calling participants of the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy 2017 to join certified mountain guides and international Arc’teryx athletes for a Mountain Clean-Up.

    This initiative is a collaboration between the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy and the the Mont-Blanc Natural Resort (MBNR) to help keep our mountains pure. So come out to support this Mountain Clean-Up, while getting acclimatized at around 2000m to the beautiful Chamonix environment.

    All voluntary participants will be provided a free lift pass by the Mont-Blanc Natural Resort (MBNR) to get to the designated area. This clinic is also supported by Lyo Food® and EOCA.

  • Acclimatization

    Clinic Meta

    To get you prepared and acclimatized for our weekend clinics in the high alpine environment, we offer a walking traverse to le Brévent with world class Arc’teryx athletes and mountain-guides which will be there to exchange with you about all the questions around the alpinism world.
    This tour is advised for all participants who have not been active above 3000m during the previous four weeks.

  • GORE-TEX® mountaineering education level 1

    Clinic Meta

    This clinic is the Level 1 of the mountaineering progression during the Academy. It has been specifically built for people wanting an introduction to mountaineering. The focus here is clearly yourself. We want you to learn how to prepare your pack before heading out on the hill, how to use safely and adequatly your alpinsim gear.
    You will be taught how to put your crampons on how to walk and progress on a glacier, and the different usage of your ice axe.
    You will also discover the basics of rope management. Towards the end of the day you might even have the chance to try some steeper ice climbing steps using two tools.
    This day is mandatory for participants who have never worn crampons before and/or would like to continue with their technical mountaineering education or glacier walk.

    Clinic Meta

    Learn all about skilled navigation and orienteering in the mountains. Clinic topics include:

    • How to plan and prepare for a tour
    • How to read maps, how to read GPS coordinates on the map / different grids / Google earth

  • First Aid and Basic Rescue

    Clinic Meta

    This course is all about high alpine rescue and on how to react in an emergency. This course shows you various rescue scenarios and teaches you from how to get help on the mountain to crevasse rescue techniques.

    It also provides some knowledge on preventing accidents and how to avoid falls. This will be given by local specialists from La Chamonniarde.

  • GORE-TEX® mountaineering education level 2

    Clinic Meta

    This course is the level 2 of mountaineering clinics on the Academy. The focus here is to learn how to travel and act on a glacier as a “party” or cordée. It will prepare you for basic glacier tours and easy alpine climbs.
    This includes: roping up together on glaciers, basic crevasse rescue scenarios, ice axe techniques, snow and ice anchors, self-arrest, route planning and advice on equipment.

    This course is mandatory for anyone who has never done a glacier tour before.

  • GORE-TEX® mountaineering education level 3

    Clinic Meta

    This course is about advanced technical alpinism. You will further your knowledge and skills to prepare you for different situations and mixed terrain in the mountains. You will practice walking on exposed terrain and ridges and learn how to adjust the rope system accordingly (short roping). You will be shown different ice axe uses and will practice front point technique. More skills, such as setting up an abseil, placing protection and leading the group on your own will be covered in this course.

  • MSR® Overnight Bivy Course

    Clinic Meta

    This course offers the unique possibility of camping in an overnight bivy in the Mont-Blanc Massif with two world-class Arc’teryx athletes. Before going onto the glacier, you will prepare for a night on the snow. Later, you will learn essential campcraft skills such as cooking outside, finding the right location and experiencing cold and snowy environments. World-class alpinists will be there to teach bivouac basics and share their alpine experiences.
    You will also learn how to build an emergency snow cave and wind walls to protect tents in case of a storm. This clinic will be supported by Lyo Food®.

  • Peak Design® Alpine Photography

    Clinic Meta

    Would you like to improve your photography skills in the mountains?
    You will go up the mountain on the last lift or by foot, shoot the last light of the day and have the chance to shoot special settings during sunset. Not to worry though, as you will be staying in the nearby hut and discussing the photos of the day and learning more about mountain photography.
    The next morning will get up early for sunrise, then shoot some climbing and mountaineering action.

  • High Altitude Medicine

    This course by mountain doctors specialized in high altitude and cold diseases will discuss what could happen on a high altitude expedition. You will learn how to prepare for alpine adventures, how to deal with mountain sickness ”MAM” and the use of the “decompression chamber”.

    In addition, you will also learn 5 different techniques on how to immobilize an injury and how to survive in extreme conditions. The end of the day will be filled with making a survival sledge to transport a casualty.

  • Improvised rescue for climbing

    Got stuck on a route? This is a rock rescue course, which also applies to alpine climbs. As a climber, you need to be self-sufficient and prepared to improvise rescue scenarios.

    You will learn how to prepare for rescue situations, escape the climbing system, perform raises, lowers and self rescue. We will also cover rope ascending techniques, reversing certain belay methods, and safe decision making. We will also discuss the implications of carrying out a rescue in technical terrain.

    This clinic is an introduction into learning different techniques for climbing long routes involving the use of portaledges. This focuses on hauling techniques, how to jumar up a rope, and general technical differences to classic multi pitch routes. Security is the most important issue here.

    Topics will include: technical climbs with two stirrups, how to place cams and nuts how to use sky hooks, crag hooks, placements of pitons, make traverses in long stretches, build a belay, abseil and how to leave a big wall.

    Love bouldering? Or want to develop your skills on hard moves to transfer into routes? This clinic will take you bouldering in the beautiful Chamonix valley where our team will help you hone your climbing and movement skills.

    With loads of boulders to try and climb we will look at various techniques and methods to move your bouldering to the next level. We will work on boulder problems developing skills such as footwork, use of heel hooks and toe hooks, using momentum, dynamic movement and problem reading.

    You will also learn effective warm up and warm down techniques and take away some exercise tools for improvement. Participants need no prior bouldering experience, this clinic will be suitable for all levels. We will adjust groups according to experience.
